ShareTweetWhatsAppIf you ever doubted the explosive popularity of live tournament poker in Australia, the WPT Prime Gold Coast Championship just set the record straight. A staggering 1,395 players stormed The Star Gold Coast across three starting flights, shelling out AU$2,000 apiece to generate a massive AU$2,511,000 (US$1,611,811) prize pool.

This record-breaking turnout not only crowned WPT Prime Gold Coast as the biggest in its history—it marked a historic high for any WPT Prime event with three starting days and the second-most entries in a WPT Prime tournament outside of the WPT Prime Championship at Wynn Las Vegas. The ultimate victor of this epic clash was Lorenz Schollhorn (cover image), whose name is now etched forever in tournament history.

Schollhorn outmaneuvered his opponents to claim his first-ever WPT title, taking home a staggering AU$401,510, including a $10,400 seat in the 2024 WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas. In a heart-pounding final showdown, Schollhorn locked horns with Andres Vasquez. Vasquez fought valiantly, but ultimately, Schollhorn’s relentless strategy earned him the crown, leaving a commendable AU$276,615 for Vasquez as the runner-up.

Of course, with a prize pool this juicy, 177 lucky players walked away with a cut. Technically, it should have been 175, but Paul Murray, Jesse Stanley, and Omer Silajdzija delivered a dramatic bubble-bursting three-way knockout, splitting a $2,211 min-cash.

Plenty of seasoned pros like Will Davies (113th for AU$2,561), WPT Anchor Lynn Gilmartin (108th for AU$2,561), Kahle Burns (50th for AU$4,756), Billy “The Croc” Argyros (48th for AU$5,491), Sean Ragozzini (45th for $5,491), Kannapong Thanarattrakul (19th for AU$10,912), and Guy Taylor (17th for AU$10,912) cashed deep but missed the final showdown. Those who snagged a coveted final table seat locked in a sweet AU$40,140 (US$25,766) payday.

Final Table Chip Count

  1. Lorenz Schollhorn – 16,425,000
  2. Travis Endersby – 12,800,000
  3. Chin Yaw Chan – 5,025,000
  4. Michael Fraser – 5,000,000
  5. Marco Perri – 4,900,000
  6. Andres Vasquez – 4,475,000
  7. Rikiya Jibiki – 3,400,000
  8. Martin Ward – 2,025,000
  9. Dylan Desmarchelier – 1,750,000 Final Table Recap

Martin Ward‘s final table dream evaporated in a single hand! Short-stacked and desperate, his ace-eight couldn’t hold up against Schollhorn’s dominating ace-queen. The knockout WPT123 continued as Marco Perri fell six hands later. Down to fumes after losing with kings to Chin Yaw Chan’s pocket tens, Perri shoved all-in with king-ten, only to face a double-whammy from Chan’s pocket eights and Schollhorn’s speculative seven-five offsuit. The board ran dry, Chan’s eights held firm, and Perri’s fight ended in eighth place.

The action was relentless! Just a few hands later, Dylan Desmarchelier‘s run ended in seventh when his pocket sixes got steamrolled by Travis Endersby’s king-queen. Endersby kept the elimination train rolling, sending Rikiya Jibiki packing in sixth place after his ace-ten fell to pocket jacks. He wasn’t done yet!

The five-handed play turned into a 42-hand showdown, capped off by Chin Yaw Chan‘s demise. His brave ten-BB shove with jack-ten was no match for Andres Vasquez’s pocket queens, which flopped a set and soared to quads! Michael Fraser soon followed in fourth, his queen-ten outgunned by Schollhorn’s pocket tens, blasting Schollhorn into a dominating chip lead.

Schollhorn masterfully chipped away at Travis Endersby‘s stack in a hand that would define the rest of the match. Defending his big blind from a min-raise, Schollhorn opted for a cunning slow play. Endersby unwittingly took the bait, check-calling a continuation bet on a king-high flop and again on the turn. The river brought a , pairing the board and spelling doom for Endersby. He checked for a third time, falling right into Schollhorn’s trap. Schollhorn put Endersby all-in with a ruthless shove for his remaining 19 big blinds. Endersby, clinging to his overpair of kings, couldn’t bring himself to fold. He didn’t realize Schollhorn had secretly flopped a set of fives and miraculously rivered a full house – a crushing blow that sent Endersby crashing out of the tournament in third place.

Heads-up play against Andres Vasquez was an epic showdown of skill and nerve. With blinds at a towering 250,000/500,000/500,000, Vasquez fired out a raise to 1.25 Million. Schollhorn, ever calculating, made the call. The flop came , promising potential action. Schollhorn checked, baiting Vasquez, who bet a hefty 1.65 Million. Unfazed, Schollhorn smoothly check-raised to 4.80 Million, setting the stage for a dramatic clash. Vasquez, fully committed, pushed all in. Schollhorn’s snap-call was chilling – his flush draw held a wealth of outs against Vasquez’s pocket jacks. The turn brought a , leaving Schollhorn still needing a diamond. Then, fate intervened – the river dramatically delivered the ! Schollhorn’s flush was complete, crushing Vasquez’s spirit and securing a runner-up finish, solidifying his place as the WPT Prime Gold Coast champion.
