The World Poker Tour (WPT) is once against heading down under to The Star Gold Coast for the 2024 edition of the WPT Prime Gold Coast festival. Following hugely successful WPT Prime tours in 2022 and 2023, The Star Gold Coast is pulling out all the stop to ensure 2024 is the best edition of the series yet.

Running from April 11 through April 23, WPT Prime Gold Coasts boasts a massive events schedule featuring several formats and poker variants for Australians and whoever else stops off in the Gold Coast to get their teeth into.

Last year’s WPT Prime Gold Coast saw 14 events, but this year’s schedule has swelled to 21 numbered events plus a plethora of satellites feeding into the larger buy-in tournaments, including the A$2,000 WPT Prime Championship.

Huge Turnout Expected for the WPT Prime Championship

Sheng YeSheng Ye The inaugural WPT Prime Gold Coast Main Event, billed as the WPT Prime Championship, saw Yang Lei outlast 895 opponents and collect A$201,755 ($141,413) for his efforts. The following year, WPT Prime fever gripped Australia, with 1,224 players paying A$2,000 to enter. Sheng Ye came out on top and saw his bankroll swell by A$374,953 ($253,264).

The 2024 edition of the WPT Prime Championship could see an even larger crowd descend on The Star Gold Coast. Buying into this event costs A$2,000, although several satellites from A$290 run throughout the series.

Day 1A shuffles up and deals at 2:30 p.m. local time on April 19, with Day 1B starting at the slightly earlier time of 12:30 p.m. on April 20. The third and final flight starts at 11:30 a.m. prompt on April 21. The WPT Prime Championship crowns its worthy champion on April 23 after three days of action. That champion receives an A$16,000 ($12,400) package to the 2024 WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas on top of their six-figure payout.

High Rollers Well-Catered For

Angel GuillenAngel Guillen While the buy-ins for most events cater to the typical mid-stakes grinders that WPT Prime attracts, high rollers are also well-catered for.

The $5K Challenge returns for 2024. Angel Guillen is the reigning champion, having defeated Aussie legend Joe Hachem heads-up in 2023.

Other high roller events include a A$3,000 Pot Limit Omaha High Roller, a A$19,100 NLHE Super High Roller, and a A$10,000 NLHE High Roller.

Golden ticket: Sheng Ye wins 2023 WPT Prime Gold Coast Main Event - Poker Media

Vasiliou was then on the wrong end of a massive three-way all-in pot before departing in eighth place, calling short with A♣9♦ after Ye shoved after a flop of 9♠7♦6♥, only for Ye to snap him off with K♦K♣, which turned a set as the board completed K♥, 10♠. Shortly after the break, Ye eliminated Slav Rypinksi in seventh place, with Rypinksi ahead pre-flop holding A♦9♦ against Ye’s J♥10♣, but despite turning a pair on the board of 4♣K♥7♦9♣, Ye’s rail went off when the dealer peeled off the river 10♥. Day 3 chip leader Gary Lin was then put to the sword by Mo Haidary, who made a move with 9♣3♣ and jagged two pair on the board of 5♥3♥K♥Q♦9♥ against Lin’s A♦2♣ to send him to the rail in sixth place. Noman MirzaAndreas VasiliouSlav RypinskiGary Lin In action leading to the heads-up phase, New Zealand’s Anita Savage jammed pre-flop from the button and found two callers in Ye and Josh Foster, who checked through a board of Q♦10♦7♦7♠ before Foster folded to Ye’s bet of 250,000 after the turn. Ye rolled up Q♣8♥ for two pair, but although Savage was leading with K♠K♥, the Q♥ on the river was the proverbial dagger in the heart of 15/15 PLO Champion, ending her Main Event run in fifth place. Ye then picked up the last of Foster’s chips after his 10♦9♦ flopped a straight and held on the board of Q♠J♠8♣4♣7♦ against Foster’s K♥2♠, resulting in a fourth place finish and a six-figure payday for the birthday boy. Anita SavageJosh FosterMo HaidaryBen Richardson Ben Richardson then found a late rush to overtake Ye for the chip lead prior to the dinner break before eliminating Haidary in third, his A♦7♦ pairing up on the flop against Haidary’s K♣Q♠ on the runout of 8♦7♣4♠9♠2♥, but although the counts were virtually even between the pair, Ye took two big pots early to cut the Tasmanian down to as low as six big blinds. From there, Richardson did manage to double through Ye three times before the final hand of the night played out before 10pm local time, with Sheng open-shoving with Q♦2♥ before Richardson undercalled with A♦5♦. Both players paired up on the board of J♦6♠5♣Q♥8♣, but Ye’s hand was best and Richardson was consigned a runner-up finish, good for $238,978: his second-highest career cash behind his final table appearance in the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event.
